Diy septum post piercing info.?

if anyone out there knows about piercing i just wondered if there are any effects not obvious that can be negative to piercing a septum oneself. some one told it can cause nerve damage or cause detachment of cartileage eventually. i did it very unpro about 6 months ago, used a real big safety pin and stuck a little ring in there. stretched it to i think a 10 or so since. healed fine and real quick and stretched easy. now aside from being a bit crooked and hurting a little bit when i pull on it, it s fine. so my main question is if there are some side effects i may not notice yet, and should not stretch it more or possibly take it out, or get it redone if thats even possible. it seems fine, but after hearing of possible long term effects i wonder
